In a viral TikTok video, a convenience store employee recounts how he was allegedly harassed by a customer over sales tax.
On June 1, user @0liviamillerr posted a video explaining how a customer refused to pay for a $3.99 bag of chips with tax, which is $4.51. She re-enacted the incident describing herself and the client.
“I’m sorry, but who are you to tell me how much money I’m spending or not spending,” the customer said on TikToker. “For example, if it says $3.99, that’s what I’m paying. I’m not going to give you extra money for you and the owner.
“Do you want to or don’t you want to? I’m not going to fight you for taxes,” she replies.
The customer then goes on to say they want the bag of chips for $3.99, the price before taxes. The worker refuses his request, noting that she has no power to decide the sales tax or the price of the products.
She says the client called it “outrageous”, before continuing: “How am I supposed to teach my daughter to grow up in a society where people like you take extra money from people like me?”
After several back and forths, the worker tells the customer to raise his issue with the store owner. “I have no control over whether or not you pay taxes,” she says.
Following another request that she ring the tokens tax-free, the TikToker claims the customer replied, “How am I supposed to tell my daughter you’re not allowing her to get the tokens she wants?”
When she told the customer that she was physically unable to adjust the price, she says the customer gave up and left.
At the end of the video, the designer added that her gas station does not tax.
The video received over 80,000 views and left many viewers shocked at the behavior of customers.
“POV: yes, I’m in charge of government only,” one user joked.
“Have they just not bought anything in their entire life? is that how it has always worked? another questioned.
“Tell me you can’t afford the bag of chips without telling me you can’t afford the bag of chips,” speculated a third viewer.
Others have shared similar experiences in which customers have complained about the cost of items, over which they have no control.
“At my job every day. They complain because the prices are going up like I have any control over it,” one user wrote.
“When people heckle me over minor price disputes (cents!) at work, I walk around the store picking up some change off the floor for them,” another joked.
