Death of a prisoner: HC orders the police to file a final report

The Madurai Bench of the Madurai High Court has ordered Madurai Police to file a final report within 60 days in the case concerning the death of a man at Madurai Central Jail in 2017.

The court was hearing the petition filed by K. Nagajothi from Andipatti in Theni district. She said that in 2017, her husband S. Karuppasamy, a casual laborer, was arrested by police for investigation after he got involved in a fight with a certain Rasu.

She said Karuppasamy was arrested and then taken into custody. At Madurai Central Jail he was tortured, the petitioner said. She alleged that her husband had died as a result of torture inflicted on him by police and prison officials.

The applicant stated that her husband had no health problems and had no injuries on his body at the time of his pre-trial detention. She requested the transfer of the investigation into her husband’s death.

Judge GR Swaminathan observed that it was regrettable that the final report had not yet been filed in the case. The court ordered the Madurai Police to file the final report within 60 days and ordered the Commissioner of Police to ensure it.

Taking note that the woman was from a scheduled caste, the court ordered the state government to consider the possibility of awarding compensation to the woman under the provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Tribes Act. listed (atrocity prevention).
