NEW DELHI : The income tax service urged taxpayers on Sunday to check their annual declarations of information relating to tax credits and the various transactions carried out during the last financial year and to file the tax return for the year d imposition in progress at the earliest to avoid last minute precipitation.
The deadline for filing the income tax return for the current tax year is December 31.
The ministry said more than 30 million tax returns have so far been filed on the new e-filing portal. More than 400,000 tax returns are filed every day, and that number grows daily as the extended due date approaches, the department said in a statement.
“The Income Tax Service urges all taxpayers to review their Form 26AS and Annual Information Return (AIS) through the e-filing portal to verify the accuracy of the tax withheld at source ( TDS) and tax payments and benefit from the pre-filling of income tax returns (RTI). It is important that taxpayers cross-check the data from the AIS statement with their bank book, their interest certificate, their Form 16 and the statement of capital gains of brokerage houses in the event of the purchase and sale of shares. / mutual funds, etc. the statement.
The ministry also said it had sent out email, text and media reminders encouraging taxpayers to file their tax returns without further delay. “All taxpayers who have not yet filed their tax returns for AY2021-22 are urged to file their returns early to avoid last minute rush,” the statement said.
The electronic verification process through Aadhaar-based one-time password and other methods is important for the department to begin processing RTI and issue refunds, the department said. Encouragingly, 2.69 crore of returns were verified electronically, including more than 2.28 crore via Aadhaar-based OTP, he said.
Taxpayers are urged to ensure that the bank account selected for refund credit must have their PAN number linked to the bank to avoid refund failures.
