Home security video shows shocking moments leading up to Partridge St.

ALBANY, NY (NEWS10) – Neighbors on Partridge Street were woken up early Tuesday morning, but never in their wildest dreams would they have imagined the sound they were hearing would be a robber attempting to shoot the woman 60 year old living in the area.

“It didn’t seem stronger than what I was used to. I assumed it was a garbage truck, tow truck, construction on campus,” Lauren Albert describes when she suddenly woke up around 4:45 a.m.

A home security video circulating on social media shows the moment of the crime. Albany police also confirm to NEWS10 that the video is legitimate. In it, a man approaches a motorcycle parked on Partridge Street.

“Our middle neighbor usually rides a motorbike in the summer, so we all know it’s his. He usually parks it on the street here,” Albert tells NEWS10’s Mikhaela Singleton.

The video, taken from the house owned by the same person who owns the motorbike, shows the unidentified man apparently attempting to steal. You can hear a sawing noise for several seconds before the man stops and hides behind the corner house as a garbage truck passes.

As the truck disappears and the attempted robbery backs up to the bike, the owner of the house on the corner appears to call out to the man. He can be seen walking up the porch steps and pushing open the front door unsuccessfully several times before shooting the victim through the front window.

He can then be seen struggling with the gun and is unable to fire again. In another stroke of luck, the 60-year-old walked away with a non-life-threatening injury, as confirmed by Albany PD.

“It’s horrible that in such a nice neighborhood, a nice person can do a nice thing and something like this happens,” Albert said.

Councilman Owusu Anane, who represents the Pine Hills Ward, said in a statement:

This woman was just trying to do the right thing by taking care of her neighbors. And for that, a criminal took it upon himself to kill this woman. It makes me angry. I have every confidence in our police department to catch anyone who has committed this heinous act and to punish them as much as the law allows. It can’t hold.

Albert says his neighbor has always been the kind of person to help others. She says that in the five years she has lived on Partridge Street, her neighbors in this quiet community have become like family.

“He’s a really lovely member of the community. She is always out gardening. Her husband will like the snow blowing all over the sidewalk for everyone. They are super nice,” she said.

“People are usually not bold enough to try to steal or cause violence here because of the police station and [Saint Rose] campus security just up the street. Something very rarely happens here that you’re not used to, so it’s really a shock,” Albert continues.

Albany police are now asking anyone with additional information about the shooting or the man in the video to come forward. You can call 518-462-8039 to reach the Detective Division or visit Capital Region Crime Stoppers to tip anonymously.

“We’re all going to be there together, but wow. What a thing to be together,” says Albert.
