What is free?

According to the IRS, if you qualify for the free file federal return offer, you should not be charged for preparing and electronically filing a federal tax return. You may still be charged a fee for state taxes, but the company must indicate that you will be charged this fee.

Are these programs safe?

The IRS says yes, they are. Your information is protected from unauthorized access while it is sent to the IRS. Companies cannot disclose or use your tax return information without your informed consent. Businesses are also subject to the Federal Trade Commission’s privacy and safeguard rules and IRS electronic records regulations, according to the IRS.
