Norwalk parents sue, claim teacher told son to ‘take your shit home’

A Norwalk special needs student and his family are suing the city and school district over allegations that he was bullied by his teacher.

Daniel Portillo, 13, says he was kicked out of the toilet last month by Joseph Pulit of the Norwalk Alternative Opportunities program.

Portillo’s cellphone video captures the moment Pulit tells him to “take your shit home.”

“Embarrassed. Embarrassed and a bit frustrated. It surprises me to be honest,” Portillo said.

The lawsuit says Pulit claimed Portillo violated an unenforced rule that no more than two people could be in the bathroom at the same time.

Portillo says he was then suspended and told to leave the building, but his parents were not notified.

He says he must have been out in the cold for hours.

“No child should be called a coward and yelled at. No child should be reprimanded. And no child should be thrown into the street and not let into a building and parents should not be warned,” a said Piper Paul, the attorney representing the family.

Portillo and his family say many students in the special education program are bullied and say no one learns.

Portillo is no longer at school.

The program told News 12 Connecticut that it had no comment on the alleged incident.

Pulit was put on leave.

Mayor of Norwalk Harry Rilling released a statement saying: ‘Any allegations will be taken seriously and fully investigated. However, it is our policy not to comment on any pending prosecutions.’

News 12 Connecticut contacted the teacher and the law firm representing the school system, but did not hear back.
