Owner store

The former Budget Blinds hardware store site has a new owner | Economic news

A Salem-based company that spends most of its time on the road has invested in its first physical installation.

Budget Blinds of Salem, North Roanoke and New River Valley bought the old house hammer head material on Colorado Street earlier this year.

The 6,000+ square foot building has other tenants, including a Mediterranean restaurant Abra Kababra. Those businesses will all stay, said Channing Preston, owner of Budget Blinds.

“We love having them around,” he said.

Preston estimated that Budget Blinds would use about half the building’s footprint. Most of that space will be dedicated to warehouse operations for the window treatment business, but it also hopes to add a customer reception area later this year.

Renovations to the facility are underway, Preston said. Budget Blinds began moving into the space in July.

“We know a lot of people know this place,” Preston said of the building, which Hammerhead Hardware has occupied for more than four decades. “And we certainly respect that too. We hope to make it something that respects the space.

Budget Blinds repainted the exterior of the building to refresh its appearance from the busy Colorado Street and Apperson Drive meeting point.

Signage development work is ongoing and Preston said he would like to partner with local artists or students over time to add murals to the walls of the building.

Budget Blinds of Salem, North Roanoke and New River Valley was launched in 2016 with Preston and a partner operating from home. The business, which is a Budget Blinds franchise, now has a team of four and was outgrowing its space in the Preston home.

“We had been looking for a new place for some time,” he said. “We knew we wanted to buy something rather than pay to rent.”

Most of the company’s work and meetings take place offsite, at customers’ homes. Free home consultations are part of its services.

But Preston said there are instances – such as when a client is in the process of building their home, or when they want to see more complex window treatment options – that have made it useful to pursue the creation of a internal receiving site.

Budget Blinds offers a wide range of window accessories, from draperies and shutters to blinds and roller shades.

“It’s pretty much anything you hang inside a window,” Preston said. “We also have exterior options.”

“We take care of the installation and we also have the best warranty in the industry.”

The new Budget Blinds building is located at 1505 S. Colorado St. Preston said he hopes to be ready to open the customer meeting area by the end of this year.
