An officer from the Kota Police Station in Udupi District filed a complaint against a Rajesh and six others, alleging assaults on police officers.
Mr Rajesh also filed a counter-complaint against PSI BP Santosh and six other staff alleging that they were assaulted against him and nine others during a mehendi celebration.
The police group was accused of storming the mehendi event in Koraga settlement in Kotathattu village. Social Affairs Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary and Kundapura MP Halady Srinivas Shetty condemned the incident.
While Mr. Santosh was suspended, six police officers were moved out of the Kota station.
In the complaint filed on Wednesday, Constable Shivarama Naika said he accompanied Mr. Santosh to the scene of the event following a complaint filed by one Subrahmanya Urala, who told police that the loud music played at night affected her father who had health problems. He also said that the organizers did not stop the music even after two police visits.
Mr. Naika alleged that when the group of police attended the scene at 11 p.m., Mr. Rajesh and others, who were intoxicated, refused to stop playing the music and brushed aside the police men. Family members are also said to have abused the police.
When he tried to turn off the audio system, one person hit his hand with a stick, Naika said, adding that he was being treated for his injury at Kundapur Taluk hospital. Mr. Naika’s complaint is registered for offenses under Articles 353, 323, 324, 143 147, 148, 504 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code.
Meanwhile, Mr Rajesh alleged in his complaint that the police stormed the place at 10 p.m. and assaulted his uncle Ganesh Barkur and his relative Lakshmi.
Three of his family members were taken to the police station and harassed. His complaint is also registered.
Police Superintendent N. Vishnuvardhan said police would investigate both complaints.
