To support himself, Kaum’s mother worked as a midwife, while Kaum was a garbage collector. Learning programming Self-taught Jan Koum became interested in programming when he was in high school. Koum also learned computer programming from old books. Beginning with self-education, Jan Koum joined a hacker group called WooWoo while still in school. After graduating from high school, Koum continued her studies at the University of San Jose. As a student, Koum worked as a computer security systems tester at Ernst & Young and Yahoo, in order to meet and eliminate tuition fees. However, in 2007 Koum decided to quit and focus on work.
